Housebuilding figures down – Shelter

Shelter chief executive Sam Younger said:

‘These new figures reveal that the true impact of the recession on housebuilding has been even more devastating than was previously thought, with housing starts down a massive 47 per cent on the previous 12 months.

‘What’s even more worrying is that housing starts by housing associations are down by 22 per cent on the same quarter in 2008. With 1.7 million households on council house waiting lists, this shows just how big the gap is between supply and demand for affordable housing.

‘It is vital that the government continues to invest throughout the downturn in the delivery of affordable housing to ensure that future generations will be able to access a decent and affordable place to live.’
