It is reported that from 1 August, council cabinet members will see their allowances rocket from £17,454 to £27,580 – an instant pay hike of £10,126. The council leader will now get £47,027 – a 15 per cent rise. All councillors get a further £10,000 basic allowance.
Unite assistant general secretary for public services, Gail Cartmail, said: ”It’s blatant double standards and hypocrisy typical of the ‘fat cat’ mentality that drove banks into crisis.
”And just like the banks, it’s ordinary people who are bearing the brunt of these local government bosses who have imposed a pay freeze on all local authority workers, including the lowest paid, such as teaching assistants and dinner ladies.
”The Tories’ own local government minister, Grant Shapps has urged these greedy Barnet councillors to ‘think twice’ – even their own party is disgusted with their behaviour.”
