According to the survey, around half a million homeowners admitted to carrying out gas work on their properties – despite 88 per cent of respondents acknowledging that work of this kind should be left to qualified tradesmen.
Landlords often carry out DIY improvements with the intention of improving resale value or raising potential rental income on their buy-to-let properties. But estate agents told LV= that many common improvement tasks will actually have no impact on market value. A surprising 69 per cent said, for example, that decoration will not affect asking price.
Amongst those improvements that do improve market value, professionally executed structural work was seen as the most valuable. According to agents, a good loft conversion could hike up asking prices by around 8 per cent.
