"We welcome this report. For a number of years the high property prices, the shortage of affordable mortgages and the economic climate has seen a surge in the number of people of all ages renting. The private rental industry has struggled to meet demand and there is a major shortage of quality private rental homes; this shortage is particularly acute in terms of housing for the elderly.
"Montague’s report includes sensible suggestions such as calling on councils to review stalled development sites, to see whether some of the new homes originally planned could be made available to rent rather than for sale. There could also be some new measures to get redundant public sector land and buildings made available for housing development – this is something we have long campaigned about.
"We hope that this report will encourage greater investment in the buy-to-let market and boost the private rental sector. We also hope it will encourage better standards and higher quality housing. We would also like to see specific plans about the building of homes for retired people. We have seen enquiries for retirement homes to rent rise by a third in the past few years. There is growing demand for such properties as more people realise the financial benefits of renting in later life. The government needs to ensure it makes provisions for retired people in its plans and address the huge shortage of retirement homes in the UK."
