The effect of the London success story upon the country house market cannot be ignored. While the ripple effect has been slower than in previous markets, the record interest and prices achieved for southern farmland and Scottish estates recently are indicators of a thaw and The Country House Company’s view is the glow from the heat of the London market will be felt in the Home Counties in 2013.
Improvements in transport infrastructure and the popularity of country schools make a move out of London compelling. The shortness of the supply of country houses to buy in 2011 and 2012 have frustrated the market and meant that many have taken a rented property as a base from which to house hunt.
However, home ownership is in our national DNA and this has been demonstrated in the majority of our best sales this year – with buyers in country rented accommodation (having moved out of London the year before) buying most of our clients’ country houses.
