Estate agent HIPs cost 50% more than from specialist

James Daley, Editor, Which? Money, said: "It’s now compulsory to get a Home Information Pack before you put your house or flat on the market – in fact, you could be fined up to £200 a day if you don’t get one.

"But don’t be fooled into thinking that you have to buy it from your estate agent. Our research shows that the most expensive high street agents charge over twice as much as the cheapest online Hip providers – so you could save hundreds of pounds by shopping around for the best deal."

The findings are part of Which? Money’s new report on how to cut the cost of selling your home. The report also reveals that homeowners can save more than £3000 by using an online estate agent rather than a high street equivalent.

We frequently receive Home Information Pack enquiries from prospective vendors who have been informed by their agent that they must choose the agent’s nominated HIP Provider.

The consumer is free to purchase their HIP from any supplier they wish although we would stress the importance of choosing a PCCB Hip Code member. The disparity between HIP prices is enormous and we would urge anyone thinking of buying a Home Information Pack to shop around with the web being a very sensible starting point.
