It is the first time the figures have shown such an increase in loft spend and Dyer, from Brentwood-based Loft Craft UK, puts the move down to the sluggish housing market.
He said: We do loft conversions across Essex, and weve seen an increase not only in the number of people having the work done, but also in the size of the loft conversions. Brentwood, Chelmsford, Basildon – pick an area and I can show you an increase in conversions and spend.
Dyer explained that more customers were having full conversions done – including stairs, lighting and windows – rather than just a basic storage option.
He said: The figure shows an average spend, so it includes basic storage conversions costing a few hundred pounds. The true figure of a full loft conversion is around £15k-£20k.
This spend it worthwhile when the Halifax’s figures showed a loft conversion added an extra 7.1% on a typical property price.
As well as typical attic conversions in houses, were also turning bungalows into houses and converting garages into fully functioning rooms. Were finding that customers are attempting to grow their houses to fit their needs, rather than moving house as soon as their families grow, he added.
And when compared to the average cost of moving house (which is over £9k according to a survey by property portal Propertyfinder.com) more homeowners could be following suit.
