Social housing more green than private sector homes

Homes built for social housing tend to be more energy-efficient than those built for the private sector, it has been claimed.

According to Marc Blomfield, managing director of The National EPC Company, which carries out Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) across all sectors, public properties are more likely to receive investment for energy-saving improvements.

Speaking to 24dash.com, he said: "The authorities are prepared to invest in improving standards and will benefit from energy cost savings in the future.

"Large old properties that have seen little investment over the years are likely to have old heating systems, poor insulation and inefficient boilers."

Mr Blomfield urged landlords in the private sector to invest in refurbishing such properties to improve their energy-efficiency, especially once the government's Green Deal scheme launches in 2012.

The Green Deal programme will see homeowners offered funding to carry out energy-saving improvements which they would then pay back through the savings made on energy bills.
