James Sherwood-Rogers, Managing Director for Landmark Legal and Financial said: "Pluvial flooding, or flooding caused by rainfall, isn’t considered by many to be a risk, but it is in fact one of the biggest sources of household flooding in the UK.
"After three years of heavy rainfall in the UK, it is clear to see that this is now not a freak occurrence and we should expect to see more to come in the future. Homeowners need to find out if they are at risk so that they can take the appropriate steps to protect their assets."
Working together with the National Flood Forum, Landmark has recently launched the Know Your Flood Risk campaign. Designed to raise awareness about the issue of flood, the campaign encourages homeowners and potential purchasers to find out if their property is at risk.
Homeowners can find out if they are at risk by purchasing a conveyancing-ready flood report which is specific to an individual property. The Homecheck Flood Report, which can be obtained through a solicitor or direct from Landmark, gives homeowners and those purchasing peace of mind and allows them to take necessary precautions if required.
Sherwood-Rogers said: "We need to learn from the lessons of the 2007 and 2008 floods and make sure that we know the flood risk to our homes and make moves to protect our property. Flooding doesn’t just damage properties; it can destroy livelihoods, businesses and families."
As well as asking a solicitor for a flood report, homebuyers can proactively carry out their own research to determine the potential flood risk to a particular property.
